When it comes to travelling in

Which area to stay in Prague?

Is Prague safe for tourists and solamente female travellers?

My very first memory of Prague is through the summer of 1998: my mama and I had been wandering through a forested playground someplace in the town, having only appeared on a late evening flight from London. We had been approached by a lone older man who wanted to help united states discover our way, and in just what might have been my mother’s worst parenting moment, she graciously thanked the guy and now we started after him through an abandoned woodland of a new city at 10pm. And individuals wonder in which I have my adventurous spirit from.

We weren’t murdered inside forest, becoming led alternatively toward hostel we had scheduled, and went on having a great time searching for garnets and enjoying Prague’s incomparable vistas and record. It was all therefore awesome…until my mother ended up being pick pocketed on a single of Prague’s famously long escalators, dropping the woman passport, bank and charge cards, and just about all we necessary to operate or capture our journey home, that has been in 2 times.

Flash ahead 14 many years, whenever Geoff and I also went to the Czech Republic, included in a whirlwind Hungary to Poland train journey. On train from Bratislava, we relayed the storyline in hushed, really serious shades, making use of words like ‘wallet’ and ‘careful’ and ‘teenaged punks’ to provide the message that Prague couldn't be reliable. And when we arrived in the town — once more, later through the night, and once again, without much concept of getting to your accommodation — from the feeling uneasy moving away from the Metro at Muzeum, walking through the dark and graffitied tunnel that I today know slices under Wilsonova close to the National Museum, and approaching towards the graffitied dark streets of Vinohrady.

I becamen’t frightened, but I definitely remember experience uneasy. I do believe I would personally have sensed even more uncomfortable easily had been taking a trip by myself, and could have definitely been regretting maybe not arranging to reach throughout the day.

I was considering this all a week ago, when I strolled the 25 minutes residence alone from a pub at 11 through the night. Geoff is at house, and I’d gone off to satisfy some buddies.

Since going to Prague 12 months ago, we will have a very different concept of safety in Prague than I did as a visitor: while I became never ever frightened as a visitor in Prague, I definitely remember feeling uneasy coming to evening. While Prague’s old city is pristine and well-preserved, the others from it hasn’t always already been as well cared for, and there's a lot of grit and grime to go together with the pastel-coloured buildings and occasional communist-style tangible block. As a resident, this is certainly part of the things I like about Prague, but as a tourist, it is difficult to determine if what you see is indicative to be in an unsafe area, or normal.
